The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched an in-depth investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of former Cabinet minister and ex-Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo.
In a statement issued on Monday, the DCI confirmed that the fatal crash occurred in the early hours of December 13, 2025, at the Karai area in Naivasha along the busy Nakuru–Nairobi Highway. Jirongo’s vehicle collided head-on with a public service vehicle (PSV) bus operated by Climax Company Ltd.
According to preliminary findings, the accident happened at approximately 2:19am and involved motor vehicle registration number KCZ 305U, which Jirongo was driving, and a PSV bus bearing registration number KCU 576A.
Investigators described the impact as severe, noting that the collision hurled Jirongo’s vehicle about 25 metres from the point of impact, while the bus came to a stop nearly 50 metres away.
Multi-Agency Team Deployed to the SceneFollowing the crash, the DCI mobilized a multi-agency investigative team comprising homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory to secure the scene and collect crucial evidence.
“In line with its mandate, the DCI deployed a combined team of homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory, who visited the scene, conducted preliminary examinations, and secured key exhibits,” reads the statement signed by J. K. Marete on behalf of the DCI boss.
CCTV Footage Sheds Light on Jirongo’s Final MomentsInvestigators made a significant breakthrough after retrieving and analyzing CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station, located near the accident scene. The footage provides a detailed, minute-by-minute account of Jirongo’s final movements moments before the fatal collision.
The CCTV footage shows that at 2:18:40am, Jirongo drove into the petrol station from the Nairobi direction but did not refuel. At 2:19:10am, his vehicle briefly stopped at the station’s exit before, at 2:19:19am, making a right turn back toward the Nairobi direction. Just six seconds later, at 2:19:25am, the footage captured the PSV bus ramming into his vehicle.
PSV Driver Questioned, Released on BailDetectives have since questioned the PSV bus driver, identified as Tyrus Kamau Githinji, who had earlier recorded a statement at the Naivasha Traffic Base. Authorities released him on cash bail as investigations into the offence of causing death by dangerous driving continue.
“He is required to report to the Naivasha Traffic Base on 22nd December 2025 for further police action,” Marete said.
Investigators have also recorded statements from the petrol station’s night guard and fuel attendant, both of whom were on duty at the time of the crash and provided firsthand accounts of events leading up to the collision.
The DCI said forensic experts plan to revisit the scene for further analysis as part of ongoing investigations. Detectives are also retracing Jirongo’s movements earlier that night, including recording statements from individuals he interacted with before the accident.
Authorities are questioning people who attended a meeting at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi, where Jirongo is believed to have been earlier that evening.
Meanwhile, investigative teams continue to conduct a deeper analysis of the CCTV footage and plan to record additional statements from passengers who were aboard the Climax Company Ltd bus, as well as other potential witnesses along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway.
File to Be Forwarded to DPPOnce investigations are complete, the DCI said it will compile a comprehensive police file and submit it to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for review and legal guidance.
The Directorate also conveyed its condolences to Jirongo’s family, friends, and relatives, assuring the public that the probe will be carried out thoroughly, impartially, and in strict adherence to the Constitution and the rule of law.
