Nairobi Central Station Set for Major Makeover into Modern Transport Hub

4 min

The redevelopment of Nairobi Central Station has moved a significant step forward after the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) confirmed it has reviewed and accepted the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Study Report for the project.

The approval paves the way for Kenya Railways Corporation to transform the historic station into a modern transport hub in the heart of Nairobi, improving passenger flow, expanding railway capacity, and enhancing connectivity across the city.

Modern Facilities Planned

The redevelopment blueprint includes two-story station buildings, upgraded platforms and canopies, new entrances and exits, footbridges, and a variety of public facilities within the station precinct. The project aims to make Nairobi Central Station not only more functional but also an iconic city landmark.

According to a notice in the MyGov weekly gazette on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, NEMA’s approval comes with conditions requiring strict adherence to environmental and social safeguards during construction and operations.

“Pursuant to Section 59 of the Environmental Management and Coordination Act, CAP 387, NEMA has received an Environmental Impact Assessment Study Report for the proposed construction of the new Central Station and public realm,” the agency stated.

Environmental and Social Safeguards

While the redevelopment promises to reshape Nairobi’s cityscape, NEMA stressed the need for careful monitoring to protect nearby residents, heritage sites, and the environment. Contractors must manage noise and vibrations, conduct baseline inspections of surrounding buildings, maintain equipment, limit vehicle idling, and monitor sound levels consistently.

“The proponent, Kenya Railways Corporation, proposes to regenerate and redevelop the Nairobi Central Station site into a new iconic city centre development that will improve accessibility and capacity of the railway for all passengers,” NEMA highlighted.

Environmental safeguards form a core part of the project. Contractors are required to minimize tree and vegetation removal, restore natural habitats through landscaping, and implement a long-term biodiversity plan to offset any environmental impact.

Waste and Water Management

Strict guidelines govern waste management: contractors must reduce waste at source, segregate for reuse or recycling, and ensure only licensed collectors handle disposal. Hazardous materials must be securely stored, labeled, and managed with spill response systems to protect soil and water quality.

Additional measures include dust control through watering, covering loose materials during transport, enforcing speed limits for construction vehicles, and monitoring emissions. Water management plans will incorporate rainwater harvesting, wastewater recycling for irrigation, and effective stormwater and flood control measures.

Balancing Development and Sustainability

NEMA noted that the main objective of the safeguards is to “provide clear mitigation measures to promote equity and sustainability while ensuring responsible construction practices.”

With this clearance, Nairobi Central Station is poised to become a state-of-the-art transport hub that balances urban development with environmental responsibility.
