Motorists Advised to Use Alternative Routes as Holiday Traffic Surges

The Ministry of Interior has urged motorists to plan their travel carefully as traffic volumes surge during the festive season, particularly on major highways connecting Nairobi to the Central, Western, and Nyanza regions.

In a statement released on Wednesday, December 17, the ministry advised travelers to prepare in advance, remain flexible with travel schedules, and consider alternative routes to avoid congestion.

“Motorists are advised to plan their journeys in advance, adjust travel schedules while en route, and make use of alternative routes where necessary to avoid congestion,” the statement read.

The ministry highlighted specific alternative routes to facilitate safer and smoother travel. Travelers from Nairobi heading to Western and Nyanza regions are encouraged to use the Nairobi–Suswa–Narok route instead of the Mai Mahiu escarpment. For those traveling to the Central region, the Nairobi–Nyeri–Nyahururu–Nakuru route offers a more efficient and secure option.

In addition to traffic guidance, the ministry announced a range of security measures aimed at protecting Kenyans and visitors during the festive season. While the overall security situation remains stable, the ministry cautioned that this period has historically seen isolated security incidents and traffic violations.

“As the country enters the festive season, we recognize this period as one marked by increased travel, heightened activity in various social places, and a surge in both domestic and international tourism,” the statement said.

“The overall security situation across the country remains calm and stable, but based on past trends, we are aware that this period may see isolated increases in security incidents, traffic violations, and other opportunistic criminal activities.”

The ministry’s guidance aims to ensure safe, smooth, and secure travel for all during one of Kenya’s busiest times of the year. Motorists are encouraged to remain vigilant, follow traffic rules, and cooperate with security officers to enjoy a safe festive season.
