The government has assured Kenyans of heightened security across the country as the nation heads into the festive season, a period typically marked by increased travel, social activities, and a surge in both domestic and international tourism.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said the country’s overall security situation remains calm and stable, but cautioned that the festive period has historically recorded isolated spikes in criminal activity and traffic violations.

To safeguard lives and property, CS Murkomen said the government has activated the National Multi-Agency Command Centre to coordinate surveillance, intelligence sharing, and rapid response operations before, during, and after the festive season.

The command centre brings together officers from the Kenya Defence Forces, National Police Service, National Intelligence Service, Kenya Prisons Service, Kenya Wildlife Service, Kenya Forestry Service, National Youth Service, and the National Government Administration to ensure seamless inter-agency coordination.

Murkomen added that security officers drawn from different units within the National Police Service and Coast Guards in Kenya have been dispatched across the country with all officers who were on leave having been recalled to work.

“Similar coordination centres have been activated at regional and county levels to enhance operational command and control,” the statement read.

“These efforts are complemented by the festive season Operation Orders operationalised by the National Police Service to ensure coordinated, intelligence-led security operations and effective maintenance of law and order across the country.”

Security personnel have been stationed at strategic points of entry and exit, and other places where there is a high flow of people, including airports, border control points, hotels, shopping malls, public beaches, tourist attractions, central business districts, critical infrastructure points, worship centers, and entertainment joints.

Murkomen also added that regional and county security committees have also enhanced preparedness against terror acts, especially where there are many people and strategic installations.

At the same time, the government has launched a nationwide crackdown on illicit brews and drug trafficking, led by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse in collaboration with the police.

The Interior Cabinet Secretary further explained that there has been a crackdown on organized criminal groups and enhanced actions on crimes such as female genital mutilation, defilement, premature pregnancies, forced marriages, violence within domestic relations, and religious extremism.

Murkomen called upon the public to be vigilant and to collaborate with the police in order to ensure safety during the holiday season.
