President William Ruto has reiterated his readiness to work with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in future governance arrangements, opening the door to a possible political pact ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking to residents of Migori County on Wednesday, December 17, during the 5th Piny Luo Festival, President Ruto said he is willing to enter a fresh political agreement with ODM if the party remains united, organised, and politically strong.
The president said his long-term vision is to form a broad-based government after the 2027 polls through an agreement with ODM, but emphasised that such cooperation would depend on the party’s internal cohesion and national reach.
Ruto told ODM leaders and supporters that unity within the party would determine its bargaining power in any future political negotiations, warning that internal divisions could weaken its influence.
“I am calling on the ODM party to strategise itself and remain strong. We want a strong ODM so that we can plan Kenyan affairs together,” Ruto said.
He added that meaningful political cooperation requires both sides to negotiate from a position of strength, noting that his United Democratic Alliance (UDA) would also work to consolidate its support base.
“If you make ODM stronger, I will also make my party UDA stronger so that we can meet and form a government through an agreement,” he said.
President Ruto at the same time reflected on his political journey within ODM, recalling his time working closely with the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. He credited Odinga with mentoring him and shaping his political career.
“I was a member of ODM, but God made me even more successful so that I can meet with ODM again. Raila is the one who taught us politics. I was his best student, and he immensely contributed to my presidency,” Ruto said.
