Minority Leader declares ODM must document all pre-election terms with UDA as major political force – rejects rivals telling party to “come without conditions”
National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed has drawn a hard line in the sand, insisting that any future pre-election agreements between the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) must be formally documented and mutually agreed upon before the party commits to any coalition arrangement.
Speaking on Sunday, December 21, 2025, Junet stated that the terms of engagement must allow ODM to clearly articulate its priorities, reflecting the party’s status as a major and influential political force in Kenya’s political landscape.
“As the ODM, we are a national party, and we will lay out our demands prior to any deals. If the Kenya Kwanza government wants us to enter an agreement on the future alliance, we must have a discussion. We are confident the government will fulfill our current demands, but we cannot afford to enter a coalition without formally stating our demands as we head into the electoral year,” he said.
The Minority Leader’s declaration signals that ODM intends to leverage its political weight to secure concrete commitments rather than accepting vague promises or gentleman’s agreements as the 2027 General Election approaches.
Junet also fired back at certain rivals, both inside and outside the party, for presuming to speak on ODM’s behalf by publicly urging the party to accept coalition deals without attaching conditions.
“Those saying ODM must come without conditions are speaking on their own behalf. We are a big party and must approach our partnership with discussion,” he added.
Junet’s comments follow recent remarks by President William Ruto, who encouraged ODM to strengthen its party structures while hinting at the possibility of forging a future coalition with the opposition party.

The President’s public acknowledgment of ODM as a potential coalition partner has intensified speculation about whether Kenya’s 2027 election will see the historic opposition movement formally join forces with the government it once fiercely opposed.
